Dolceacqua

Dolceacqua, the sweet water, an enchanting village in the interior of the beautiful region of Liguria not far from the coastal town of Ventimiglia. With the southern French Côte d'Azur, the principality of Monaco, the Italian Floral Riviera and the Ligurian Alps in the hinterland within reach, you won't be bored for a moment. Dolceacqua has a rich history dating back to Roman times. The town is known for its medieval architecture, narrow streets and historical sights. One of the most iconic sights is the imposing castle of Dolceacqua, which dates back to the 12th century and towers high above the town.
A typical Italian borgo, the village grew up around the castle, Castello dei Doria, of the powerful Doria family from Genoa. The castle overlooks the small houses and streets surrounding it like a mother watching over her children. The almost thirty-three-metre-long stone arch bridge over the river Nervia, which connects the old medieval part with the new part, is especially famous because it was painted by Claude Monet. Dolceacqua is full of cosy shops, nice terraces and excellent restaurants for every budget.
You can also enjoy the local wine here, the Rossese, Pigato and Vermentino. Enjoy a coffee on the terrace in the morning and an aperitivo in the afternoon/evening. In Italy, it is customary for a bar to serve a small snack, called stuzzichini, with a glass of wine or other alcoholic refreshments. Dolceacqua's local culture is lively and welcoming. Dolceacqua is surrounded by a breathtaking landscape of rolling hills, green valleys and several rivers. Nature lovers can enjoy hiking and cycling trails that lead them through picturesque vineyards and olive groves. Do not forget to visit the nearby Nervia Valley, where you can discover beautiful waterfalls and picturesque villages such as Isolabona, Apricale, Rochetta Nervina, and Pigna.
Dolceacqua hosts several festivals and events celebrating local traditions and culture throughout the year. Don't miss the annual "Sagra del Rossese", a feast dedicated to local wine, or the medieval festival "Dolceacqua in Fiore", where the streets are transformed into a colourful sea of flowers. The highlight is the annual fireworks celebrating the sister city of Monaco, which takes place the first Saturday after 14 August.  Discover the magic of Dolceacqua and be enchanted by the charm of this hidden jewel in Liguria.
